MATHEMATICS

The curriculum in mathematics offers an in-depth major in mathematics and service courses designed to meet the needs of students interested in chemistry, computer science, physics, biology, engineering, teaching in the public schools, teaching in the junior and senior colleges, and business administration. The major is designed to give students a broad education in pure and applied mathematics which can be utilized for employment in industry, teaching, and/or as a foundation for graduate study. It offers students opportunities to gain appreciation for the artistic nature and cultural beauty of mathematics.

DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS.  Requirements for a major in mathematics include the following:

Satisfying a departmental entrance examination. This requires a score at or above the 70th percentile. If this percentile is not attained, a diagnostic/prescriptive strategy is used to assist the student in satisfying the goal.  The test is then administered again.

Completing the mathematics requirement of MATH 13752-College Algebra and MATH 13753-Precalculus with a grade of “C” or above in addition to the following courses:

a. Thirty six (36) semester hours of mathematics:

MATH 23750 Discrete and Combinatorial Mathematics
MATH 24750 Calculus and Analytical Geometry I
MATH 24751 Calculus and Analytical Geometry II
MATH 33752 Basic Mathematical Logic
MATH 33753 Multivariate Calculus
MATH 33754 Modern Abstract Algebra
MATH 33755 Applied Statistics
MATH 43752 Introduction to Topology
MATH 43753 Probability
MATH 43754 Ordinary Differential Equations
MATH 44758 Research Seminar in Mathematics

b. Minimum of seven (7) hours of additional requirements:

PHYS 14760 General Physics I
COMP 13752 Introduction to Computer Programming or
COMP 24755 Structured Programming

c.  Nineteen (19) hours selected from the following:

MATH 33750 History of Mathematics
MATH 33751 Foundations of Mathematics
MATH 42750 Special Problems
MATH 43750 Advanced Calculus
MATH 43751 Linear Algebra
MATH 43755 Modern Geometry
MATH 43757 Advanced Applied Mathematics
CHEM 14720 General Chemistry I
CHEM 14721 General Chemistry II
ELECTIVES Student’s Choice (3 hrs)

Total semester hours: 128, inclusive of 66 semester hours in Academic Foundations

Students must maintain a grade of “C” or above in all of the courses required for a major.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR IN MATHEMATICS. A minimum of twenty-one (21) semester hours are required for a minor in mathematics and satisfactory completion of the departmental entrance examination.  These requirements may be selected from the following:

MATH 24750 Calculus and Analytical Geometry I
MATH 24751 Calculus and Analytical Geometry II
MATH 33751 Foundations of Mathematics
MATH 33754 Modern Abstract Algebra
MATH 42750 Special Problems
MATH 43753 Probability
MATH 43754 Ordinary Differential Equations
MATH 43757 Advanced Applied Mathematics

TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM IN MATHEMATICS. MATH 43756-Capstone Course for Secondary School Teachers or MATH 33756 - Essential Elements of Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers is required for students who plan to teach mathematics. Consult the  Education Department for complete information on teacher certification.
